FreeportCAN Action Group:

Consumer Choices

Every item you buy is first harvested or mined, manufactured, packaged, transported and ultimately disposed of. Buying stuff drives climate change. One of the best things we can do for the planet is keep stuff in use longer and reduce our overall consumption.

Impact

60% of global carbon emissions are caused by the production and use of household goods. And the typical American’s yearly emissions are 5 times that of the the world’s average person. Changing our consumer habits is an essential part of slowing climate change. The solutions focus on buying less, buying resale, repairing and recycling.

The Consumer Choices Action Group helps bring climate-friendly consumer choices to our community. Changing the way we buy and use products not only reduces our contribution to climate change, but saves money too.

What you can do

One of the best things we can do for the planet is keep stuff in use longer and reduce our overall consumption.

The Freeport Consumer Green Guide puts local resources for sustainable living at your fingertips. It’s a one-stop handy resource where you will discover where to buy resale, repair and recycle.

Freeport Green Guide

Reducing, reusing, and recycling has never been easier.

There are many programs to recycle, compost, and upcycle things you don’t want anymore so they don’t end up in the trash. However, the best way to reduce waste is to buy less to begin with!

More of our electricity is created by renewable energy than ever before. And is becoming more so. Reduce your carbon footprint by going electric for your stove and oven and watch your carbon footprint shrink!

With a little bit of planning you can remove a lot of the single use and plastic items from your day to day life! Single-use or disposable products waste significant resources, and end up polluting our waterways or wasting away in landfills. Try to avoid using single-use items, and instead opt for reusables. Reusables not only save you money, but also keep harmful plastics out of our environment.
